Expand Detroit City Airport
Get serious about expanding Detroit City Airport. Detroit City
Airport is one of the most underutilized jewels of the City of
Detroit. Great cities have major airports that are alive and well
within their city limits. The last airline to offer commercial service
to Detroiter’s, Pro Air Airlines, operated for two years at D.C.A.
before high fuel prices and below-market pricing by Northwest
Airlines forced them to shut their doors. However, before they
ceased operations, they had four (4) aircraft operating out of
City Airport, each aircraft created 100 direct jobs on the ground.
Those were Detroit jobs! Not to mention the countless spin-off
jobs that were supported by the way of taxis, hotel stays, cargo
shipments and the like. City Airport is a job creator, and I will use
my office in Lansing to reopen its doors.
Wind Turbine Powered Electricity
Invest in a Detroit resource that will never relocate to Mexico or China- the
Detroit River. The Detroit River will never run out of water or wind, ever!
For generations, we have overlooked this tremendous asset as a means of
capitalizing on the European tourist markets, hydro-electric power stations
and now wind turbines. According to the U. S. Mayors Green Jobs Report in
October of 2008, there are expected to be 4.2 million green jobs created by
2038. Over 85-percent of these jobs are said to be in metropolitan areas. A
wind turbine technician can expect a basic salary of $36,000. Those are
real jobs with benefits and a secure future.

Creating Jobs
If Michigan is suffering flu-like symptoms, then Detroit is under cardiac arrest. As a lifelong Detroiter, I remember walking our
neighborhoods to and from Stellwagon, Hamilton Middle School, and Servite High School during the wee hours of the
morning. I fondly remember many of my classmates would proudly proclaim that their mother and/or father worked at GM,
Ford or Chrysler plants. As a child, it seemed as though everyone worked for an automaker. I also remember the quality of
life that my peers enjoyed. Two new cars parked in driveways of homes that were a sense of pride. Slowly, that reality
began to change for far too many Detroiters, and our leadership was flatfooted in crafting substantive alternatives to wean
auto dependant workers from cars to new technologies. The Detroit of today is a living testimony to what happens when we
fail to prepare for changes in trends.
However, those who are anxious to write our obituary will have to wait a little while longer- Detroit’s best days still lie ahead.
The one key asset this city has is its people. Detroiters are world-class fighters and masters of the comeback. By utilizing
key assets that we already own, we can put Detroiters back to work and make the necessary infrastructure improvements to
compete in a global economy.

To put it simply, “There’s electricity at the bottom of the Detroit River!” It used
to be the case that only way we could produce electricity from the power of
water involved construction of a dam. Not anymore! The future of hydropower
involves special underwater turbines that produce energy from the movement
of waves, rivers and tides- perfect for the strong currents of the Detroit River.
This technology has been used in parts of Europe, in New York City’s East
River, and most recently in Hastings, Minnesota. The underwater turbine in
Hastings was activated in January of 2010 on an experimental basis, has been
rated for 100 kilowatts (enough to power 100 homes). This technology would
fully utilize one of Detroit’s most precious and permanent assets create
hundreds of permanent new jobs and position the City of Detroit to be at the
forefront of a technology that will be in high demand.
These are just a few ideas that we have for putting Detroiters back to work and rebuilding our communities.
